The impact of mentorship

I enjoy mentoring people. I get a lot of personal satisfaction watching someone develop professionally and personally. I take great pride in watching someone progress in their life and career knowing that I’ve been part of that development.

Sometimes, as a leader, the role of mentor/mentee develops naturally without either party consciously agreeing to the arrangement. Most of the time though, there’s a conversation, establishing boundaries, goals, and formalising what will happen. Both arrangements can work well, or not, depending on what each party is prepared to contribute.

I’ve come to appreciate that a role as a mentor also contributes to my own leadership development. Mentoring is often viewed as a one-way street, but in reality, it’s a dynamic exchange that enriches both parties.

An experience that stands out: a mentee who initially was almost too reserved in their approach eventually grew into a confident leader after our discussions and collaborative projects. Witnessing this change was great, but the experience helped me too; it required a conscious effort on my part to consider how to help draw out the strengths of this person, to consider my own leadership approach and to adapt to new methods and perspectives.

The experiences I have had absolutely shaped how I lead. I’ve learned, and hopefully, demonstrated, that leadership isn’t solely about directing others, but also about growing alongside them. Mentorship has broadened my understanding of diverse perspectives, highlighted the value of adaptability, and strengthened my commitment to fostering an inclusive environment.

Mentoring is incredibly satisfying. Whether you have chosen to mentor youth in your local community or professionals in your industry; the impact, if you allow it, on your leadership journey will be significant. The growth of your mentees often reflects and enhances your own development.
